CARDIAC - Adult cardiac surgery with broad exposure to coronary, valve, and aortic surgery including experience with heart failure and transplant. Includes consult coverage and bimonthly clinics at on-site Veteran's Administration (VA) facility. (All VA patients go to UK Hospital for surgery and post-op management.)
THORACIC - General thoracic surgery with broad exposure to lung, esophageal, chest wall, pleural, and mediastinal diseases. Includes on-call coverage of on-site VA facility for thoracic emergencies.
CONGENITAL - Congenital cardiac surgery
TRAUMA ICU - Evaluation and management of complex, critically ill general surgery patients.
CT ICU - Comprehensive critical care management for cardiothoracic patients
CATH LAB /IP - Hybrid rotation with the cath lab and interventional pulmonary experience, including diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.
PED SURG - General pediatric surgery including evaluation and management of pediatric patients.
EGS ICU - Management of emergency general surgery patients in a critical care setting.
GOLD - General Surgery Oncology
CATH LAB / ECHO - Cardiology focused rotation teaching performance and interpretation of cardiac testing.
CTP ICU - Hybrid rotation with Pediatric ICU for congential cardiac patients and evaluating congenital heart disease in cath and echo labs.
TRACK SPECIFIC CHIEF ROTATION - Varies depending on planned practice focus of resident either cardiac or thoracic at UK.
ELECTIVE OPTIONS:

  • Cardiac - Adult cardiac surgery with focus on complex patients.

  • Thoracic - General thoracic surgery with focus on complex patients.

  • Congenital - Congenital cardiac surgery

  • Interventional Pulmonary - Focusing on airway interventions

  • Cath Lab / TAVR - Focused time for minimally invasive caerdiac valve surgery including TAVR and mitraclip

  • Heart failure/Transplant - Focus on heart failure clinic, transplant conferences, ECMO management, organ procurements, and transplants.

  • Saint Joseph Hospital rotation

GOOD SAMARITAN - Good Samaritan is an on-site community hospital whioch provides care for straightforward general surgery patients.
SAINT JOSEPH HOSPITAL - Tertiary care hospital and medical center with cardiothoracic surgeons with mixed cardiac and thoracic practice.
SOUTHERN OHIO MEDICAL CENTER - Regional tertiary care hospital in Portsmouth, Ohio with strong general and vascular surgery experience in the first two years and increasing thoracic and cardiac exposure in the third year.
