Colon and Rectal Surgery Fellowship

Welcome to the Division of Colon and Rectal Surgery

Founded within the UK Department of Surgery with a rich tradition, the Division of Colon and Rectal Surgery has developed into one of the largest academic programs of its kind in the southeast. The section continues to mature as a clinical leader in all aspects of colon and rectal surgery with a practice base consisting of a medically complex population. The program faculty consists of five surgeons, each bringing their expertise from nationally-recognized colon and rectal fellowship programs. The faculty is dynamic, with a healthy mix of experience levels that challenge the section to deliver the highest level of care for patients whilst also upholding a rich, academic tradition.

Our physicians specialize in minimally invasive approaches for colon and rectal cancer and inflammatory bowel disease using advanced laparoscopy and robotic surgery. We are experts in lower endoscopy screening procedures, endoscopic removal of complicated polyps, and transanal (TAMIS) eliminating the need for surgical intervention.

UK Colon and Rectal Surgery embodies a collaborative approach with its network of colleagues within the university healthcare system as well as throughout the Commonwealth of Kentucky. This includes partnerships to treat a broad range of conditions, whether it be with our gastroenterology group to provide comprehensive care to patients with inflammatory bowel disease or with our surgical and gynecologic oncology groups to provide multidisciplinary care for recurrent pelvic cancers. The scope not only includes complicated scenarios, but similarly excels in the management of benign anorectal disease.

In addition to robust educational rotations for UK General Surgery residents, the section now offers an ACGME-accredited Colon and Rectal Surgery Fellowship. The twelve month fellowship offers advanced training in all aspects of colon and rectal disease and surgery.
